Diagnostic Utility
Identifies: One of the members of the somatostatin receptor family SSTR2A may be useful in:
1. the identification of neuroendocrine differentiation and meningiomas.
2. predicting biochemical response of tumors (e.g. somatotropinomas/growth hormone pituitary adenoma) to somatostatin analogs.
3. correlating with in vivo octreotide imaging results. It is most valuable, for surgical pathologists, in distinguishing the various morphologic variants of meningiomas from other soft tissue neoplasms, including solitary fibrous tumor, hemangiopericytoma, hemangioblastoma, and other spindle cell neoplasms given the high level of expression of SSTR2A of proteins in meningiomas, SST2A is a marker of low grade neuroendocrine carcinomas (e.g. carcinoid), pheochromocytoma, and meningioma.
