Specimen Requirements
• A punch or skin shave biopsy received in Michel's Media or a sterile fresh container.
• It is optimal to send an additional specimen in formalin for routine histology.
Diagnostic Utility
Direct immunofluorescence (DIF) test for tissue-bound autoantibodies and aids in the accurate diagnosis of immune-mediated dermatological disorders.
Required Patient Info
All specimens must be labeled with two patient identifiers that can be linked to the requisition.
A paper or electronic requisition must accompany the specimen. Information on the requisition should include the following:
• Patient's name
• Birth date
• Billing instructions
• Specimen source
• Relevant patient history and procedure, to include a request for immunofluorescence
• Date and time of specimen collection
• Ordering physician's complete name
Storage and Transportation
• Ambient for Michel's Media
• Refrigerate fresh specimens if delivery is delayed.
Cause for Rejection
• DIF testing cannot be performed on samples received in formalin.
• Unlabeled/mislabeled specimens
• Unclear orders
