Diagnostic Utility
SF-1 is a nuclear transcription factor that regulates genes controlling steroidogenesis and the development of gonads and adrenal glands. It is normally expressed in testes, ovaries, adrenal gland, pituitary and placenta. SF-1 has become a valuable immunohistochemical marker in the diagnosis of sex cord-stromal tumors of both ovaries and testes and the differentiation from their histologic mimickers, such as sertoliform endometrioid adenocarcinoma, carcinoid tumors, and various germ cell tumors. It is also helpful in distinguishing adrenal cortical tumors (adenoma and carcinoma) from renal cell neoplasms and pheochromocytomas..
