Specimen Requirements

Formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded tissue block or cell block, or 1 unstained charged slide for each test requested plus 3-4 additional unstained slides cut at 4 microns. Adequate space on each slide for control tissue is required.

Diagnostic Utility

It is mainly used as a marker for tumors of renal cell origin (e.g., renal cell carcinoma), in conjuction with PAX8 and gp200 (RCC), among other markers. In contrast to PAX8, PAX 2 is not expressed in thyroid or thyroid carcinomas.
