Formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded tissue block or cell block, or 1 unstained charged slide for each test requested plus 3-4 additional unstained slides cut at 4 microns. Adequate space on each slide for control tissue is required.

Olig2 is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor involved in the development of oligodendrocytes in normal brain tissue. It is expressed in normal neuroglial tissue and most glial tumors, including most oligodendrogliomas and astrocytomas as well as more than half of glioblastoma multiforme. Low to moderate levels of expression may be present in ependymomas. Inconsistent staining has been reported in non-glial CNS tumors, including medulloblastomas, central neurocytomas, dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors and PNET. It is essentially negative in non-neuroglial tumors, such as meningiomas, schwannomas, hemangioblastomas, lymphomas, and metastatic carcinomas, etc.
