Diagnostic Utility
CD35 serves as a cellular receptor for C3b and C4b bound immune complexes, and is expressed on erythrocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, B lymphocytes, and renal glomerular podocytes. The protein is found on follicular dendritic cells of lymphoid tissue, and, similar to CD21, it is a valuable immunohistochemical marker for follicular dendritic cells, including its tumors (follicular dendritic cell sarcomas). CD35 may be used in assessing the follicular dendritic cell meshwork in the lymphoid tissues, which may be effaced by various disease processes, and may aid in the diagnoses of follicular lymphoma, nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma, and etc.
