Clinical Significance

Cellular morphology of cytologic specimens is interpreted to diagnose inflammatory, neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions. In addition, cytologic diagnoses is used to monitor recurrent and metastatic malignant conditions.

Request form should include clinical history or the need for microbiology testing.

Storage and Transportation

Store and transport refrigerated.

Cause for Rejection

Frozen specimen, specimens without two (2) patient identifiers or improper fixative.Upon review, the technologist/pathologist may determine the material is unsatisfactory for proper evaluation.
