Diagnostic Utility
EMA is a group of glycosylated transmembrane proteins, related to the human milk fat globule (HMFG). EMA is present in a variety of glandular epithelia and their adenocarcinomas. It labels mesothelioma with a strong membranous staining along the surface microvilli and with little cytoplasmic staining. EMA is expressed by various non-epithelial tumors, including meningioma, ependymoma, perineurioma, epitheloid and synovial sarcoma. It can also be found in some hematolymphoid neoplasms, such as anaplastic large cell lymphoma, plasma cell neoplasms, and L&H cells of nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin's lymphoma.
