Novel Genetics and Diagnostic Criteria – Multiforme No More

Dr. Meghan Driscoll presented “Novel Genetics and Diagnostic Criteria – Multiforme No More,” at the 4th Annual Innovative Approaches to Brain Tumor Management course on Friday, February 1, hosted by Swedish Medical Center and Seattle Science Foundation.

This course focused on the future of brain tumor therapy with the goal of improving treatment response rates, outcomes and overall patient care. It was designed for neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists, medical oncologists, neuroradiologists, radiation therapists and allied health professionals who specialize in the treatment of patients with brain tumors in Washington, Alaska, Montana, Oregon and Idaho.

Dr. Driscoll discussed the role that gene mutation (loss of function, gain of function, amplification) and promoter regulation play in the clinical and histologic behavior of primary brain tumors; newly recognized tumor diagnoses that have distinct genetic alterations and pathophysiology; and the relative roles that surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation in the newly recognized tumor diagnoses.
