Pulmonary and Mediastinal Pathology
CellNetix's depth of sub-specialty expertise in pulmonary and mediastinal pathology allows us to provide crucial services to large tertiary care medical institutions, as well as a wide variety of other large and small medical institutions in a broad geographic area.
Lung cancer is now responsible for most cancer deaths in the U.S. for both men and women (170,000 deaths and 160,000 new cases on average, each year). The most important prognostic and treatment factor for lung cancer is accurate pathologic classification and staging. Recent inroads in lung cancer therapies rely on not only accurate tumor classification but also knowledge of and familiarity with ancillary tumor cell characteristics. Non-neoplastic lung diseases can be very difficult to diagnose clinically, and pathologic examination of tissue can provide definitive classification and early detection.
Mediastinal pathology is a challenging area for accurate diagnosis bacause there are numerous possible origins for lesions in this area (e.g. thymoma, lymphomas, germ cell tumors, metastases). Experience evaluating often small biopsies obtained by a variety of modalities, experience with uncommon lesions (rarely encountered in the average pathology practice), and collaboration with other specialties are essential, and contribute to the very high quality of service provided at CellNetix.
